I am a Professor in the Department of Political Science at The University of Western Ontario, Canada. Previously, I was an associate professor at the Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Ciência Política and an assistant professor at the University of North Texas Department of Political Science. I received my PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
I am the co-author or co-editor of three books and the author or co-author of forty peer-reviewed articles published in journals such as Social Science Quarterly, Electoral Studies, and PS: The Journal of Politics. You can find my CV here. More information on my published work is available here.
My research interests center on political behaviour, including voting and elections, public opinion, political psychology, political participation, and on statistical, experimental and survey methodology. My work is comparative and extends to Brazil, the U.S., France, Canada, and Latin America, more generally. Sometimes it compares two or more countries; at others, it focuses on one country in particular.
I am currently working on two large research projects:
The first examines compulsory voting in Brazil. It has two main objectives: 1) estimating the impact of compulsory voting on turnout; and, 2) examining voters’ knowledge of the law concerning compulsory voting and its effect on their decision to vote or not.
The second project seeks to examine and explain support for affirmative action policies (racial and other quotas in university admissions and hiring) in Brazil.
More information on my ongoing research is available here.
I am fluent in Portuguese and Spanish, in addition to English and my native French.
